Many fires are started in homes each year due to the use of candles. But candles can add warmth and coziness to any home. So, how can you use candles and prevent starting an unwanted fire?
Maybe the biggest safety tip is to not leave a burning candle unattended. If you leave the room, blow out the candle. And never fall asleep with a candle burning. Also, watch what you place a candle near. Make sure it is not burning next to something flammable, such as curtains. Place your candle on a solid, steady surface. You don’t want it to be wobbly and easily knocked over by kids or pets.
It has been recommended to trim the wick of your candle to a quarter of an inch before lighting it, as this will help prevent the flame from growing too big or burning too fast. And think about what you are lighting your candle with. If you use a match, dispose of it properly. Tossing a warm match into a trash can is dangerous because it can ignite other materials. It is best to let the match cool off or rinse it under water first.
